Company Biography

Custom Neon owner and master glassbender, Laurie Lewis, has been lighting businesses and homes with neon for 27 years. Her grandfather, Ed Mros, owner of Sun-Lite Neon Sign Co. is no longer, but the passion of glassbending for Laurie has never waned. As owner of Now There’s Neon in Salt Lake City in the 80’s, she did work for the Osmond Studios, The Utah Artist Guild, The Utah Art Festival, PBS, performance artist Richard Santiago, and was the subject of several television and magazine profiles. In addition she has produced catalog art pieces and her custom designed neon art lights up many private homes. She also still has signs glowing in the windows of Salt Lake City business.

In 1994 she moved to the Seattle area to be near her family. After working for a local sign company for 5 years, her desire for more creativity and independence led her to start Custom Neon in the small town of Hansville in North Kitsap County, Washington. Since February of 2000, she has been producing signs for businesses all over the Northwest, fabricating neon for vintage sign restoration, and providing wholesale sign work for a number of independent sign companies.

Still, Laurie’s interest in using neon in non-traditional ways was not being fully addressed. In 2005, the addition of Joan Peter brought a jolt of creativity and challenge to Custom Neon. Joan’s background includes experience in many forms of communication, including the graphic arts and video production. Joan also holds a BA in Anthropology and has worked as an archeologist both on the coast and in the mountains of Washington State.

This collaboration has not only produced some very original sign designs for local businesses, but has also led to the development of two neon art series: the Southtwest-inspired “Petroglyph Series” and the locally-inspired “Marine Series”.
